Meaning

rwxr-xr-x
Owner: read, write, execute
Group: read, execute
Others: read, execute

Common errors and how to fix them

SSH says my key permissions are too open
Private keys must be readable only by you: chmod 600 ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 (or 400).
I can't open a folder with 644
Folders need execute (x) to be entered. Use 755 for folders and 644 for files.

Chmod Calculator FAQ

The owner can read, write and execute (7 = 4+2+1); group and others can read and execute (5 = 4+1). It's the usual setting for folders and scripts.

The owner can read and write (6); everyone else can only read (4). It's the usual setting for normal files.

Read is 4, write is 2 and execute is 1. Add them for each of owner, group and others: rwx = 7, rw- = 6, r-x = 5, r-- = 4.

Rarely. It lets every user on the system change or replace the file. Use the least permission that works.

Special permissions shown as a leading digit: setuid (4) runs a program as its owner, setgid (2) as its group or makes new files inherit the folder's group, and sticky (1) stops users deleting others' files in shared folders like /tmp.
