Word Counter FAQ

It uses your browser's built-in text segmentation, which splits text into words the way a language-aware dictionary would. Hyphenated words and contractions such as don't count as one word, and punctuation is ignored.

Yes. Characters are counted as user-perceived characters, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one. Words in most languages are detected, though languages without spaces between words (such as Chinese or Japanese) are segmented by the browser and may differ slightly from other tools.

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute, and speaking time about 150 words per minute. Real speeds vary with the reader and the difficulty of the text.

Google usually shows about 50–60 characters of a page title and around 150–160 characters of a meta description before truncating. The limit bars help you stay inside those ranges.

Standard X posts are limited to 280 characters. Some subscriptions allow longer posts, but 280 is still what most readers see before the post is cut off.

A sentence ends with ., ! or ?, as detected by the browser's sentence segmenter. A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next by an empty line.
