When should you use the JSON to Zod?

  • Validating API responses at runtime in a TypeScript app
  • Creating form or request-body validation for Next.js and tRPC
  • Getting types and validation from one source of truth

How to use the JSON to Zod

  1. 1

    Paste JSON

    Paste a sample object or array.

  2. 2

    Name the schema

    Change Root to something like User โ€” you'll get UserSchema and a User type.

  3. 3

    Choose types

    Keep 'Export TypeScript types' on to add z.infer types.

  4. 4

    Copy into your project

    Copy the schemas or download schema.ts.

Examples

Optional field from array items

JSON

{
  "orders": [
    { "id": 1, "total": 9.5 },
    { "id": 2, "total": 20, "coupon": "SAVE" }
  ]
}

Zod

export const OrderSchema = z.object({
  id: z.number().int(),
  total: z.number(),
  coupon: z.string().optional(),
});

export const RootSchema = z.object({
  orders: z.array(OrderSchema),
});

Common errors and how to fix them

A field is z.unknown()
The sample only had null or an empty array there. Use a sample with a real value, or edit the schema by hand.
Validation fails for real data
Your sample may not show every variation. Add .optional() or .nullable() where real data can differ.

JSON to Zod FAQ

A TypeScript-first validation library. You define a schema once and get both runtime validation (schema.parse(data)) and a static type (z.infer<typeof schema>).

Keys missing from some array items get .optional(), and fields that are null in the sample get .nullable().

Whole numbers become z.number().int() and decimals z.number().

Yes. The generated schemas use core APIs โ€” z.object, z.array, z.union, .optional() and .nullable() โ€” that both versions support.

Arrays with different value types become z.array(z.union([...])).

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your JSON never leaves your device.
